PTAG will be represented by Rachel Sumner, Lorena Perry, and Caroline Thompson at the WiN Canada annual conference in Niagara Falls, October 18–21.
Women across PTAG play key roles throughout our organization, bringing expertise, leadership, and perspective to complex project delivery across the nuclear sector.
The WiN Canada Annual Conference is an important forum for connecting professionals, sharing knowledge, and supporting the continued growth of women in nuclear.
If you are attending, connect with our team and join the conversation around the people and leadership shaping the future of nuclear in Canada.
This week, PTAG’s Senior Director of Workforce Development, Rachel Sumner, joined leaders from industry, labour, education and government in Washington, D.C. for the Nuclear Energy Institute’s Nuclear Energy Workforce Summit (October 6–8).
The scale of the challenge was clear. DOE’s Dr. Mike Goff told delegates that quadrupling U.S. nuclear capacity to 400 GW by 2050 means growing a workforce of roughly 70,000 toward 375,000.
“We need the workforce now,” he said. “In fact, we’re probably even late.”
Three themes from the Summit
Workforce Demand signals come first. Unions and colleges said they can supply people, but only against firm, specific demand. As one building trades leader put it, “market signals to us are not a press release.“
Better data, even if imperfect. Speakers from DOE to the Center for Energy Workforce Development agreed the sector is being asked to build a workforce system with too little labour-market data.
Ecosystems beat one-off programs. State and regional consortia in Idaho, Virginia and the Southeast showed that neutral conveners, funded for the long term, are what turn pilot programs into pipelines.
What it means for our clients
Share your demand. Role-by-role, year-by-year hiring forecasts are what unlock training seats, apprenticeships and partner investment. Talk to PTAG about how we can help you do this and maintain the confidentiality of your workforce plan at the same time.
Build with others, not alone. Workforce is a partnership, not a procurement. Anchor your plans in regional ecosystems and shared intermediaries rather than competing for the same small talent pool. Work with us and our workforce ecosystem partners in your region to benefit from the power of consortium.
De-risk the worker. “We are putting way too much risk on the worker and the prospective worker right now,” Rachel told the Summit’s workforce strategy panel. Paid pathways, portable credentials and wraparound supports such as childcare widen the talent pool. Our Advisors can support you in designing a workforce strategy that places project risk where is can be best managed.
Connecting the U.S. and Canadian ecosystems
The two countries draw on the same trades, the same supply chain and, at times, the same people. Vogtle’s construction relied on welders recruited from Canada. Rachel chairs the Canadian Nuclear Association’s Workforce Council and advises University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering on workforce initiatives, so the Practice brings what we heard in Washington directly into Canadian workforce planning, and vice versa.

PTAG is pleased to support Rachel Sumner’s participation in this year’s OCNI Board election process and her continued contribution to important industry discussions.
Canada’s nuclear industry is supported by a diverse and highly capable supply chain spanning engineering, construction, manufacturing, project services, technology and specialized expertise.
As the sector continues to grow, collaboration across this supply chain will be essential to strengthening the workforce, organizational capabilities and project delivery capacity needed to support Canada’s long-term nuclear programs.
Rachel’s candidacy reflects PTAG’s support of these conversations, supporting collaboration across the supply chain and contributing to the continued development of Canada’s nuclear sector.
We wish Rachel and all candidates well as the OCNI campaign period approaches its conclusion.

PTAG’s Rachel Sumner will be attending the Nuclear Energy Workforce Summit, hosted by the Nuclear Energy Institute, from October 6 to 8, 2026, in Washington, D.C.
As the nuclear sector prepares for new projects, life-extension work, and long-term capital programs, workforce planning is becoming increasingly important to successful delivery. Owners need teams with the right capabilities, capacity, and readiness to support projects from planning through execution.
At PTAG, Rachel focuses on workforce development, helping organizations strengthen the capabilities and long-term sustainability of the teams responsible for complex nuclear projects and programs.
Her work supports the broader challenge of aligning workforce strategy with project delivery, so organizations can build internal capability and prepare for future program demands.
The Summit will provide an opportunity to connect with industry peers and discuss the workforce strategies needed to support the next generation of nuclear projects.
If you are attending, connect with Rachel in Washington to continue the conversation.

PTAG is pleased to support the OCNI/CNL Banquet Dinner and Industry Day as the Lunch Sponsor, September 23 and 24 in Chalk River and Pembroke, Ontario.
The Banquet Dinner takes place Wednesday, September 23, followed by Industry Day on Thursday, September 24, featuring the trade show and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ update on upcoming scope.
Andrew Grant, Lorena Perry, and Jim Welsh will be representing PTAG throughout the event.
For nuclear owners, successful capital project delivery depends on more than individual contracts or isolated project functions. It requires coordination across planning, controls, engineering, construction, quality, supply chain, and turnover.
PTAG works inside owner teams to help connect those functions across the full project lifecycle, from front-end planning through execution and turnover.
If you are attending, connect with Andrew, Lorena, or Jim at the banquet on Wednesday or at the trade show on Thursday to learn more about how PTAG supports nuclear capital programs.

Execution risk in nuclear is business risk. Contracts can allocate that risk, but they do not integrate execution.
On a nuclear new-build program, the OEM owns the technology. The EPC owns its contracted scope. The owner remains accountable for the overall outcome, including the risks that sit between contracts, organizations, interfaces, and critical owner decisions.
That is where project integration becomes essential.
PTAG works on the owner’s side as Project Integrator, helping connect contracting strategy and governance, integrated project controls, nuclear quality and regulatory commitments, change management, construction readiness, and the OEM and EPC interfaces that ultimately influence field performance.
For eighteen years, PTAG has worked alongside owners across nuclear and major capital programs in the U.S. and Canada. From early contracting strategy through commissioning and first megawatt, the objective is consistent: make the owner’s delivery system work as one.
PTAG has joined the Texas Nuclear Alliance, and Nick Revelas, Michael McBean, and Chris Deidun will be in Houston for the Texas Nuclear Summit from September 21 to 23.
If you are standing up a new-build nuclear program and have not yet resolved who will integrate across the OEM, EPC, and owner organization, connect with the PTAG team in Houston.
That is the conversation we want to have.

PTAG will be at OCNI Nuclear Industry Day, taking place September 15 to 16 at Bruce Power in Tiverton, Ontario. As the Trade Show Bag Sponsor, we are pleased to support an event that brings together utilities, suppliers, and project delivery professionals from across Canada’s nuclear sector.
Andrew Grant, Chris Deidun, Lorena Perry, and Shafaq Riaz will be on site for both days at Booth 20.
The event begins with the trade show in B10, followed by a reception at the Nuclear Innovation Institute Advanced Facility. Day two will focus on utility-led discussions around supply chain priorities and structured B2B meetings with Bruce Power and Ontario Power Generation procurement teams.
For PTAG, the conversations are closely aligned with the work we support across nuclear refurbishment and new build programs. Large nuclear projects require disciplined project controls, clear contractor interfaces, reliable scheduling, and strong coordination across engineering, procurement, construction, and operations.
Our team will be there to discuss practical project delivery challenges, especially where schedule complexity, contractor coordination, and execution risk are creating pressure on major scopes.
If you are attending OCNI Nuclear Industry Day, stop by Booth 20 and bring us a schedule problem you have not solved yet.

PTAG will be represented by Michael McBeanat the Nuclear Energy Conference & Expo, August 24-27 in Dallas.
NECX brings together utilities, reactor developers, suppliers, and regulators to address the deployment and investment challenges shaping new nuclear builds. One issue stands out: how do owners manage cost, schedule, and construction performance when there is no fifth or sixth unit to benchmark against?
For first-of-a-kind and early fleet projects, strong project controls, construction management, and PMIS integration become even more critical. Owners need reliable baselines, clear visibility into field performance, disciplined change control, and integrated project data that supports timely decisions.
The goal is not simply better reporting. It is creating a project delivery environment where emerging risks, trends, and constraints can be identified early and managed with confidence.
Michael will be at NECX discussing how these disciplines need to adapt to the unique pressures of new nuclear projects and how the foundations established on early units can support more repeatable performance across future deployments.
If you are attending NECX, look for Michael McBean on the conference floor and connect with them.
