August 2016 – Mike Davidson, Director of Global Consulting at PTAG, was a speaker at the Construction Industry Institute’s (CII) annual conference held in National Harbor, Maryland. The theme of this year’s conference was “Elect to Make CII Work for You”.

The conference featured many industry changing highlights, including:

  • The new CII Knowledge Base which allows member organizations to readily access over 30 years of valuable knowledge and wisdom
  • The Value of Best Practices report developed by the Performance Assessment Committee
  • Lessons Learned from both the Implementation Strategy and Professional Development committees
  • Industry Economic Outlook (by sector)
  • Review of the successful Alignment on a Giga project
  • Collaboration effectiveness from Bechtel
  • Reports from eight research teams reporting out in 2016

PTAG was involved in four speaking assignments at this conference presenting on behalf of the Implementation Strategy Committee (ISC), Professional Development Committee (PDC), and Research Team (RT) 314a.

Research team 314a released a new scope development tool for use on small infrastructure projects under $20M in value, which assists project organizations to ensure scope is sufficiently defined at various gates within the Front End Planning (FEP) phase of the project. PTAG assisted in the development, testing and use of this tool over the past two years of their participation in the research team, and presented on the correct use of the tool at the CII annual conference.

The Implementation Strategy Committee (ISC) seeks out to develop new and creative processes, procedures, tools, systems or other management techniques to promote and encourage the use of CII practices within member organizations. As a case study, PTAG and a major oil and gas client presented a successful process for effective best practice implementation, which emphasized the importance of owners and consultants working together to develop and implement an effective program.

The implementation program that PTAG developed consisted of a number of steps which included:

  • A governance gap analysis assessment, to determine current and future state requirements
  • A tailored best practice training program for both awareness (senior staff), and deeper knowledge (users of the processes)
  • PTAG facilitated sessions using CII best practice tools
  • Co-facilitation with PTAG and client staff, and ongoing coaching and mentoring services

PTAG is certified by CII as a Registered Education Provider (REP) and a Registered Advisor Program (RAP) provider. Through these programs, PTAG is fully engaged with CII member and non-member organizations in the effective implementation of the seventeen CII Best Practices and over ninety tools.
